ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY

EMPLOYMENT STATUS:      FULL TIME / EXEMPT

JOB SUMMARY:                    Prosecution of all criminal cases presented to the District Attorney’s Office.  Duties include reviewing cases presented for criminal charges by all law enforcement agencies and adult and juvenile probation officers.  Ability to assess a criminal case and negotiate plea bargains with defendants or attorneys. Represent the State in District Court, County Court, and Justice of the Peace Court for trials, hearings, and all docket calls.  Responsible for reviewing reports of probation violations and filing all necessary motions. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Doctor of Jurisprudence.
  2. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas, awaiting bar results, or taking the July/August 2024 bar examination.
  3. Knowledge of courtroom procedure.
  4. Ability to perform in the courtroom.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Prosecution of criminal cases from intake to final disposition.
  2. Provide required information to individuals and agencies involved in each case.
  3. Coordinate with Adult and Juvenile Probation, Courts, defense attorneys, witnesses, law enforcement agencies, and all other agencies involved in each case.
  4. Maintain accurate calendar of court dockets.

  1. Effectively handle the stress of practicing law.
  2. Primarily work regular business hours (8-5), and other hours as needed.
  3. Contribute as a team player seeking common goals.

CONTACT WITH OTHERS:

High interaction with staff members, the public, District and County Court, law enforcement agencies, defendants, and probation.

COMPENSATION

Salary $80,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, with opportunity for prosecutor longevity supplements after 4 years of service as an assistant prosecutor and additional salary supplements.   Benefits include access to a quality health insurance plan and enrollment in a defined benefit retirement plan through the Texas County and District Retirement System, www.tcdrs.org.

Annual leave includes 12 holidays and 10 vacation days.  Sick leave accrues 6.667 hours per month.  Payment of State Bar dues, CLE classes, and membership in the Texas District and County Attorneys Association.
