An Abilene man accused of running over a woman with his van last December was found guilty of manslaughter Wednesday, an hour after the jury began deliberating.
Jessie Earl "Buddy" Griffith, 60, originally was accused of murder in connection with the death of Brenda Sue Eldridge, 46, who was killed Dec. 22 at Briarwood Apartments in the 3200 block of North 3rd Street.

With Mexican news dominated by the kidnap-killing of 14-year-old Fernando Marti, the execution of Mexican Jose Medellin for the 1993 rape-murder of two girls in Texas appears to have sparked far less outrage than people here have shown in previous death penalty cases.

It didn’t take long for prosecutors to lay out their case, alleging Christi Denice King was guilty of murder in the drowning death of Elisiah Miguel Guajardo, her 10-month-old son.
It took even less time for the jury to agree with them.
The prosecution rested Wednesday morning, after less than two days of testimony in the 196th District Court during King’s trial on one count of murder.

AUSTIN — Heliberto Chi, a Honduran native who led authorities on a six-week manhunt after gunning down an Arlington clothing-store manager in 2001, moved one step closer to execution Wednesday when the state’s highest criminal court rejected his bid for a stay.
