Bizarre New Year's Day babysnatching sends man back to prison

A parolee who broke into a home near Axtell on New Year’s Day, snatched his girlfriend’s diaper-clad toddler and fled shirtless into a wooded area in subfreezing temperatures is headed back to prison for four years.
Ryan Keith Hopkins, 24, pleaded guilty Monday to injury to a child with a deadly weapon, a state-jail felony enhanced to a third-degree felony because of a prior drug-related conviction.
Judge Matt Johnson of Waco’s 54th State District Court approved the plea bargain between prosecutor J.R. Vicha and Hopkins, then sentenced the plumber from Axtell.
Because of the deadly weapon finding, Hopkins must serve at least two years in prison, which he likely will serve concurrently with the remaining three years on his parole after it is revoked, said his attorney, Vik Deivanayagam.
