Within a few hours of Paul Devoe's arrest in his native Long Island in August, the suspect in multiple slayings told police he wanted to talk, according to testimony Tuesday in Travis County.

Suffolk County, N.Y., homicide Detective Susan Nolan asked Devoe whether he wanted to contact a lawyer, and Devoe replied, "What the ... is a lawyer going to do for me now?" Nolan recalled.

Then Devoe "told me details of the murders in Texas as well as the murder in Pennsylvania, and he told me about people he had shot at in other states," Nolan said.

Nolan's testimony, which did not include details about Devoe's statements, came during the first day of a pretrial hearing before state District Judge Brenda Kennedy on a motion by Devoe's lawyers to suppress potentially incriminating statements he has made about the accusations against him. The hearing continues today, with Devoe's mother and sister expected to be among the witnesses.

Devoe is accused of killing six people; he has been indicted in two slayings in Travis County.
