SAN MARCOS — Each of the 14 felonies that a jury convicted Cesar Mojica Carmona of last week carries a maximum sentence of life in prison. Today, his attorneys asked the jury to consider probation instead of jail time.

The jury began deliberating Mojica Carmona's sentence Wednesday afternoon after hearing from his attorneys and prosecutors, who said Mojica Carmona deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Mojica Carmona, 24, abused his children, a 4-year-old daughter and 3-year-old twins, by hitting, whipping and biting them hard enough to create scars all over their bodies, prosecutors argued during closing arguments of the sentencing phase of Mojica Carmona's trial.

The jury also found him guilty of breaking the children's bones and not giving them enough to eat.
