TITLE: Assistant City Attorney I/Prosecutor
REPORTS TO: Sr. Assistant City Attorney II

JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction, the Assistant City Attorney I/Prosecutor is responsible for preparing and handling municipal court prosecutions including pretrial conferences, arraignments, plea agreements, jury and bench trials, preparation of motions, warrants and other legal documents relating to municipal court prosecution and city operations; Assists the City Attorney in providing a wide range of professional legal services to city departments and various boards and commissions and other duties as assigned.
PRINCIPAL JOB DUTIES
- Under direction of the City Attorney, prosecutes and disposes of criminal and civil cases in municipal court, conducts legal research and writing and handles any appeal from municipal court.
- Review and prosecute City ordinance violations in municipal court.
- Review and prepare all documents necessary for municipal court prosecution.
- Analyze requests for prosecutions from the police department, code enforcement, and citizens.
- Develop knowledge of City ordinances and state and federal laws affecting municipalities.
- Develop legal research and writing skills and courtroom advocacy skills.
- Perform other municipal civil legal work as assigned, to include assisting the City Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, and Senior Assistant City Attorney as required.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in the State of Texas
Knowledge of civil law, criminal law, and evidence
Training in courtroom procedures
Knowledge of legal research and writing skills
Admission to the Federal Bar after one (1) year of employment
Preferred: Prior legal practice experience in municipal law, criminal prosecution, or related field
