Chief Assistant Criminal District Attorney – Felony

The Galveston County Criminal District Attorney’s Office will have an opening for a Chief Assistant Criminal District Attorney – Felony effective December 9, 2024.

Job Summary:  This position tries cases, supervises junior felony prosecutors, and performs other complex legal functions.

Major duties include:

  • Tries cases in State Court.
  • Represents the State in criminal jury trials, pre-trial hearings, and status conferences.
  • Presents cases to the Grand Jury.
  • Negotiates dispositions and discovery issues and oversees plea-bargains.
  • Confers with police officers to assist in investigations, provide advice, direction and/or assistance, review search and arrest warrants in felony cases.
  • Provide law enforcement with grand jury subpoenas, warrants, and court orders as needed.
  • Coordinates with Community Supervision officers with regard to the progress of probationers.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates junior prosecutors in the court.
  • Advises and counsels executive-level employees on legal issues.
  • Conducts legal research on complex legal issues as requested.
  • Provides training regarding criminal law and other legal areas as requested.
  • Provides teaching to law enforcement on report writing, probable cause affidavits, warrant writing.
  • Performs public relations duties for the department; speaks to civic groups and organizations.
  • Able to report regularly for work and be on time.
  • Performs related duties.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of law.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the department in order to direct and coordinate work within the department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Texas for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the ethical principles of law.
  • Current membership in the State Bar of Texas.

Starting salary is $108,012.
