Job Description: Chief Investigator

General Duties:

  • Under the direction from the elected District Attorney, will handle sensitive criminal investigations.
  • Manage the activities and oversee daily operations of the Investigative Division of the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, which include In-house Investigators, Special Investigations Unit, South Texas HIDTA, and Task Force Officers. 
  • Coordinate investigations with and act as liaison to representatives of federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies as well as District Attorney’s Office Staff.
  • Work on assignments outside of normal 8am-5pm office hours as requested by the District Attorney.
  • Ensure compliance with TCOLE regulations.

Ability to:

  • Supervise, evaluate and counsel investigative staff.
  • Recruit investigators as positions become available.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate investigative staff duties/responsibilities.
  • Maintain investigator staffing/coverage for office security purposes.
  • Ensure investigators maintain current investigative techniques and best practices.
  • Ensure investigators maintain current firearms qualifications.
  • Maintain investigative staff records, ensuring that required background checks, educational hours, firearms qualifications, and certifications are up to date.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of Investigative Division assets including firearms, assigned investigator safety accessories, radios etc.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and maintenance of fleet vehicles.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Conduct criminal/civil investigations.
  • Provide status updates on cases/projects.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other law enforcement agencies and the public.
  • React quickly and calmly during emergency situations.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma required.
  • BA in criminal justice preferred.
  • 10 years’ experience in law enforcement preferred.
  • Must be a TCOLE certified master peace officer OR equivalent federal law enforcement experience of at least 10 years and eligible to become TCOLE certified.
