Division Chief – Ellis County & District Attorney Civil Division

The Ellis County & District Attorney elect, Lindy Beaty, is accepting applications for an Assistant County & District Attorney Civil Division Chief.  The position will officially open January 2, 2025.  The Civil Division Chief will be responsible for supervising between 3 to 7 attorneys in various aspects of civil law, including, but not limited to, open records requests, asset forfeiture, contested civil cases, preparing and defending contractual disputes and advising other County Departments on legal issues encountered by those departments.    The Civil Chief is expected to be the primary legal liaison between the District & County Attorney’s Office and the elected County Judge and County Commissioners.

The position will become available January 2, 2025.

Salary up to $167,584.00

Primary Responsibility of the Chief of the Civil Division:

  • Supervise the Civil Division and report directly to the Elected County & District Attorney.
  • Work closely with the County Commissioners Court, providing legal counsel when appropriate. 
  • Advise elected and appointed Department heads on various legal issues including but not limited to employment, policies and contracts.
  • Provide legal advice on various county regulations, including but not limited to, utilities, subdivisions, platting, environmental and other regulations impacting Ellis County.
  •  Represent the interest of Ellis County and the State of Texas in civil matters including Asset Forfeiture, Animal Seizures, Human Resource related matters, Public Information Requests,  etc.

Areas of Practice will include: Open Meetings, Government Law, Construction Law, Family Law, Employment Law, Constitutional Law,  etc.

Must have a JD from an accredited law school; be licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas; be proficient in civil law, government law, employment law and construction law; have strong leadership skills; be detailed oriented; and pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years experience working in a government office or equivalent position.
  • 3 years supervisory experience.
  • Civil Litigation experience
