Summary:

Under administrative direction, is responsible for technical and administrative support to the Criminal District Attorney regarding external issues affecting the District Attorney’s Office; serves as the Criminal District Attorney’s representative at external meetings; researches, develops and monitors legislative issues of interest to the Criminal District Attorney; consults with State Officials and staff on legislative issues; informs general public of the District Attorney’s Office initiatives and community services.  This position works directly with the District Attorney’s Communications Officer to assist in the preparation of press releases and provide detailed and up-to-date information on governmental affairs, community relations, proposed legislation affecting public safety, and other issues affecting Bexar County government. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for coordinating and/or conducting staff analysis of proposed State legislation, monitoring status of bills, and recommending implementation of legislative requirements relating to the Criminal District Attorney’s office
  • Conducts detailed analyses, prepares frequently complex reports and develops specific recommendations regarding special projects arising from Federal regulations and state laws
  • Researches legislative issues of interest to the Criminal District Attorney, coordinates development of proposed legislation, solicits input and assistance from State Officials and staff, and monitors progress of issues through the legislative process
  • Acts as liaison for the Criminal District Attorney during various meetings with other government offices, other state and county offices, and external organizations to include the Texas District & County Attorneys Association & Texas Association of Counties
  • Attends, reports on, and makes recommendations to the Criminal District Attorney regarding legislative meetings
  • Identifies and coordinates implementation of common or related services between the Criminal District Attorney and various state and Federal agencies
  • Collaborates with the District Attorney’s Communications Officer to inform media of the District Attorney’s Office initiatives and other community services
  • Provides strategic leadership for the brand of the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office visual identity and positioning through coordination with the District Attorney’s Communications Officer and other administrative staff to maximize brand management and exposure through a public presence
  • Provides leadership for the development of collegial working relationships with academic institutions, corporate entities, chambers of commerce, civic organizations/associations, religious groups, neighborhoods, nonprofit organizations and other key community leadership
  • Collaborates with the District Attorney’s Office staff and coordinates special projects on behalf of the District Attorney to manage and involve corporate, government, law enforcement, philanthropic and community relations
  • Provides management oversight in the Office of Community Initiatives
  • Prepares special and highly detailed written and oral reports on frequently complex and sensitive issues, as required by the District Attorney
  • Performs related duties as required by the District Attorney

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, Business, Humanities, Science, or a related field, and four (4) years public or private sector professional level experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of local government operations; knowledge of legislative process; knowledge of good management and organization principles; knowledge of organizational development and revitalization/utilization concepts and practices
  • Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing; skill in communicating effectively with diverse groups of individuals utilizing tact and diplomacy
  • Ability to remain flexible under pressure situations; ability to supervise legislative interns; ability to prioritize tasks to ensure maximum effectiveness; ability to maintain effective working relationships with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, co-workers, other County employees, outside government agencies and organizations, news media and the public
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance
  • Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test
  • Required to be on-call 24 hours a day
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
