VICTIM ASISSTANCE COORDINATOR
CLASSIFICATION: FLSA-This position is a full-time, hourly non-exempt (5-day work week Monday – Friday, 40 hours per work period) May require working more than 40 hours per week.
PAY RANGE: up to $59,400 annual county-funded base salary with additional S.B.22 supplemental grant funding available depending on qualifications and experience.
The position is available January 1, 2025, until filled.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Victim Assistance Coordinator (VAC) delivers a system of support to crime victims through notification and information about the criminal justice processes and makes referrals to other social services agencies. This position will provide assistance to victims and witnesses working closely with prosecutors and law enforcement agencies, and social service agencies. The VAC will work directly with crime victims ensuring compliance with Art. 56.02 and Art 56.021 Code of Criminal Procedure regarding Crime Victims’ Rights. Provide assistance to victims of crimes throughout their case.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES / FUNCTIONS:
• Essential duties/functions, under the supervision of the County Attorney, may include but are not limited to the following:
• Notifies victims of their rights and assists in applying for compensation under the State Crime Victim’s Compensation Act.
• Provide assistance to victims with the Victim Impact Statement and Crime Victim Compensation Application, if requested.
• Assists victims who visit our office for a Protective Order and determines whether we forward it to a prosecutor or if a referral to another agency is necessary.
• Provide assistance to victims by keeping victims informed of the status of their case in person, by mail, by email and by phone. Accompany victims to court proceedings, if requested.
• Assist with scheduling victim meetings with prosecutors, including attending meetings as requested.
• Records and maintains statistical data on work activities and reports related to victim information as required.
• Works closely with law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, investigators, Board of Pardon and parole, social services agencies, and the judiciary in delivering support to victims. Provides follow up to special requests from prosecutors and investigators for appropriate community and victim service referrals.
• This position interacts with crime victims, supervisors and peers, attorneys, other County employees, law enforcement agencies, witnesses, clients, and the general public.
• Answers multi-line telephone and directs calls and individuals, including victims and witnesses as necessary.
• Receives and enters new case filings in office software program.
• Performs administrative tasks including data entry, making copies, scanning, and processing documents on a daily basis.
• Performs all other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree and years of experience in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field; OR an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Proficiency using specific job-related technology
SECURITY REQUIREMENT
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) CJIS security clearance.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of prosecutor office procedures are helpful, but not required.
Knowledge of the Court Systems and Law Enforcement is helpful, but not required.
Ability to operate computer systems, office machines and possess effective communication skills
• Bi-lingual is preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS and SCHEDULES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
County facilities, including vehicles, are smoke-free and alcohol-free working environments. Location of this position is in the Atascosa County Justice Center Annex which consists of a normal office environment with heat and air conditioning with an assigned office but in a multi-person work area.
The position requires daily and prolonged repetitive motor movements, such as but not limited to computer data entry and use of office equipment. The position also requires prolonged periods of sitting and standing. Regularly required stooping/bending and moving/lifting/pulling storage files and boxes. There will also be performance of light physical and intellectually stressful work in an office and/or courtroom environment in a mainly sedentary position.
Significant contact with the public, crime victims, witnesses, persons accused/convicted of crimes, opposing attorneys, law enforcement officers, community supervision and corrections officers, and other courthouse and county personnel, department heads and elected officials, and partner agencies.
Normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, eight (8) hours per day, 40 hours per week. Duty hours will be generally 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch. Regular in person work attendance is essential. Occasional remote work may be available upon approval in advance by the County Attorney. Employee must have regular attendance and arrive to work on time, prepared to perform assigned duties and work assigned schedule. Employees maybe be required to record their work hours properly and to submit time records promptly to their supervisor. Will be required to attend job related seminars, conferences, and/or training. Attendance could require out of town travel with/without overnight stay.
